Position Overview
Direct Counsel is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join a prestigious law firm’s Office of the General Counsel in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. This role focuses on compliance, risk management, and internal legal operations , requiring a detail-oriented attorney with strong organizational and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Compliance & Risk Management: Develop and oversee firm-wide policies related to document and data retention, attorney transitions, and client file transfers.
- Licensing & Regulatory Matters: Manage licensing requirements and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Subpoena & Document Requests: Handle subpoena responses and assist in managing legal holds and document productions.
- Contract Review & Information Governance: Evaluate contract provisions, advise on internal policies, and support firmwide risk management initiatives.
- Insurance & Liability Assessments: Assist in preparing insurance applications and assessing coverage needs.
- Attorney Transitions & Client Files: Ensure smooth attorney onboarding/offboarding processes, including handling of confidential client matters.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of legal practice experience , preferably with broad in-house experience at an AmLaw 100 firm
- Active bar membership in New York, Illinois, or California and in good standing
- Strong knowledge of law firm operations, risk management, compliance, and regulatory frameworks
- Experience with data retention, document management, and information governance policies
- Exceptional organizational, communication, and contract review skills
- Ability to work effectively across multiple practice areas and jurisdictions
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $210,000 – $315,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
