Job Summary
We are seeking a Legal Document Specialist to join our team in a fully remote capacity, with daily travel to local county courthouses in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb Counties (MI). The ideal candidate must have a reliable vehicle capable of handling all weather conditions, a clean driving record, and strong technical skills in scanning and editing legal documents using PDF software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat). This position involves identifying, retrieving, and processing civil complaints from the courts in a time-sensitive, deadline-driven environment.
The successful candidate will have experience in legal research, paralegal work, legal publishing, or media and must be comfortable managing a high volume of court filings, logging data into shared spreadsheets, and building relationships with court personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Court Document Retrieval & Processing
- Travel daily to assigned courthouses in Oakland, Wayne, and/or Macomb Counties to obtain civil complaints.
- Monitor new filings to identify key cases of interest.
- Locate and review court documents, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Scan, edit, and format legal documents using Adobe Acrobat or similar PDF tools.
- Upload and log electronic copies of court filings in a shared database.
Tracking & Data Management
- Maintain an organized log of retrieved documents using shared spreadsheets (e.g., Google Sheets, Excel).
- Track and document daily case filings, ensuring all records are up to date.
- Assist in the same-day identification, retrieval, and electronic submission of civil complaints.
- Follow departmental processes to meet tight deadlines.
The pay range for this position starts at $20/hrs to $25/hrs; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonus opportunities may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Prior experience in legal research, legal publishing, paralegal work, legal media, or print industries.
- Strong ability to navigate local county court systems and understand court filing processes.
- Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and other PDF editing software for document formatting.
- Experience using shared spreadsheets (Google Sheets, Excel) to track and manage case data.
- Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple case filings under tight deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail in reviewing and processing legal documents.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a remote setting.
Preferred
- Familiarity with civil litigation and legal terminology.
- Experience handling court filings and records retrieval.
- Knowledge of legal research tools and case tracking methods.
- Reliable vehicle capable of handling all weather conditions.
- Clean driving record and valid driver’s license.
- Up-to-date vehicle insurance.
