Job Description

Oak Grove is a small progressive school in Ojai, California. We are seeking a part-time librarian to serve Kindergarten through 8th-grade students for the 2025-2026 school year. The responsibilities include managing our dedicated library space, the Owl’s Nest, which is available to students individually for scheduled hours as well as for whole classes to visit. The Librarian also visits classrooms to provide support and instruction on literacy, research, and digital citizenship. The Librarian collaborates closely with teachers, administrators, and support staff to support teaching and learning, to incorporate culturally responsive materials into curricula, and to create an environment that encourages a love of reading and learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Librarian supports students and the school in the following capacities:

• Perform record-keeping and administrative duties associated with the library, including inventory, circulation, and book purchasing.
• Ensure the library collection represents a diverse and multicultural range of authors and topics seen through an anti-bias lens – books that reflect the identities of students and the identities of others in meaningful ways, that challenge bias and support equity, and equip students to interact and connect respectfully with others.
• Ensure the library collection contains age-appropriate materials that support social and emotional health and provide accurate information on human development and sexuality. 
• Develop and support an information literacy program in collaboration with homeroom teachers. 
• Develop and support a digital citizenship program in collaboration with homeroom teachers.
• Be able to support a range of learners from Kindergarten to 8th grade, including providing appropriate materials for striving readers and those reading above grade level.
• Create and maintain a welcoming and organized space in the Owl’s Nest library that inspires students to love reading and research. 
• Support students and classroom teachers with print and digital resources when students are tasked with research projects.
• Maintain a regular schedule for students to visit the library independently or in groups.
• Regularly visit classrooms for read-alouds, lessons on information literacy, and research skills.
• Organize special events such as author’s visits, themed displays, book fairs, etc. In addition, collaborate with staff for our annual Day of Reading fundraising event.
• Attend regular staff meetings, professional development in-services, trainings, and special events. 
• Support students with respectful communication, peaceful conflict resolution, and social-emotional growth and development.
• Supervise interstitial spaces during breaks and lunch times. 

Minimum Job Requirement

• Completed AA or BA degree from an accredited institution in a related field.
• 2 or more years’ experience working in an educational setting with elementary-aged students.
• Library and/or Elementary Teaching Experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

• Familiarity with the philosophy of the school (including an inquiry-based approach to education in a non-competitive atmosphere) and an understanding of progressive education.
• Comfortable with navigating databases and managing inventory.
• Proficiency with GSuite and other digital tools relating to research and information literacy.
• Ability to supervise and support students when using technology for research purposes.
• Experience working with students with learning differences.
• Experience and knowledge in the science of reading, including the teaching of phonics and the progression from “learn to read” to “read to learn.”
• Self-motivated, self-disciplined, professional, creative, and energetic.
• Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
• Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
• Experience with Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and strong conflict resolution skills.

Compensation

$31 – $33 per hour (20 hours per week)
