Come join our team at Darrah Springs Hatchery. As a newly hired Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid you can expect to fill your days with a variety of tasks that enhance fisheries and fishing opportunities in California. Incumbents will perform daily fish hatchery duties that include feeding fish, cleaning screens, cleaning ponds, picking up dead fish and eggs, maintaining hatchery grounds, and record keeping. Incumbents will also assist technicians with planting fish, spawning, diploid and triploid, egg care as well as caring for all stages of fish development. You should also expect to operate fish pumps, forklifts, tractors, mowers, power tools and fish planting vehicles. You will work with several varieties of rainbow trout, including the California Heritage Eagle Lake trout.

Working Conditions

Must be willing to work in remote areas, perform varied manual tasks, work weekends on a rotational basis, work holidays and unusual hours when required, and work in extreme weather conditions of snow, heat, and wind. Willing to work away from the hatchery as required for field work or assisting at other hatcheries. Incumbent will be required to stand for long periods of time in cold water and in unheated buildings. Must possess a valid Class C Driver’s License and obtain a Forklift Certification. Must wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, in the office and on-site visits. State owned housing is not available and is not required as a condition of employment.

Special Requirements

Physical strength and agility; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five (5) minutes.
