Job Description

Position Overview

Library Assistant for African and Global Studies Assist the librarian for Africana and International studies to build, evaluate, and assess assigned collections through review and selection of materials related to Africana Studies (including Africa and the African Diaspora), with additional responsibilities for Francophone and Global & International Studies, including materials in African languages (e.g., Arabic, Kiswahili, Wolof, Yorùbá, etc.), English, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, and other languages as needed.

Job Description

  • Staff the International Collections department service desk
  • Create list of books in English and other languages
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: helping with book exhibits, fact-checking and compilation.

Required Qualifications

  • Current KU student enrolled in 6 or more credit hours. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments.)
  • Ability to work independently as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Basic familiarity with KU Libraries collections and services as demonstrated by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of French, Italian or any African language.
  • Demonstrated ability to use library resources (e.g., library online catalog and other electronic databases).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with online content management systems.
  • Previous experience with data entry.

Advertised Salary Range

$11.00 per hour

Work Schedule

Approximately 10 - 15 hours weekly between 8am - 5pm, Monday thru Friday. Flexible hours based on your course schedule; no weekend hours required.
