The Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County Parenting Educator, in collaboration with the Family and Consumer Education Program Leader, is responsible for the implementation of the parenting and family life educational workshops and workshop series in Dutchess County. The Parenting Educator will provide direct program delivery and education to families to reduce risk of incidences of child abuse/neglect, to maintain child safety, and to enhance family capacity to provide a safe and healthy home. The position is responsible for using current research based information, curriculum including, but not limited to, Discipline Is Not a Dirty Word (DINADW) and the Parenting Skills Workshop Series (PSWS), to enhance the child rearing and caregiving practices of parents, in order to promote safe, stable and nurturing homes and communities. The Parenting Educator will, in collaboration with the FCE Issue Leader, assist with evaluation and program recommendations as well as do follow up visits with families who have gone through the program. This position is grant funded and will require flexible hours to accommodate working families.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the areas of Human Development, Child Development, Health, Home Economics/Family and Consumer Education, Psychology, Sociology or Public Health; or Associate’s degree with 2-4 years of work or volunteer experience in a role relevant to the position;
  • Minimum one year of relevant work experience;
  • Previous experience in program coordination and direct teaching;
  • Experience with public speaking in small and large groups;
  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional educational tools as well as electronic and social marketing/media technology;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to effectively lead and participate in professional and volunteer team efforts;
  • Ability to transport visual aids, tables, and meeting materials to program sites;
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position;
  • Ability to meet acceptable background and motor vehicle check standards;
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate;
  • Ability to utilize computer technology for education and communication purposes;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods to reach individuals and groups; adults and youth;
  • Ability to relate to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish (read, write, speak);
  • Case Management knowledge and/or experience;
  • Related college credits or coursework in Human Development & Family Studies, Child Development (prenatal to age 21), Adult Learning, Experiential Education/Group Learning, and/or Diversity Education.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery - 70%

  • Apply subject matter knowledge/expertise to create lessons plans to deliver educational programming;
  • Teach the existing educational program as defined and innovative educational programs with discretion;
  • Collaborate, educate and create acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences
  • Effectively utilize all forms of mass media, including social media, for innovative delivery of educational programs;
  • Serve as subject matter resource in discipline and provide standard responses;
  • Utilize a variety of proven educational methodologies;
  • Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities as part of program delivery;
  • May be involved in multi-disciplinary and multi-association team efforts to deliver program;
  • Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty, program units, and other Land Grant University faculty and program units for program delivery guidance;
  • Apply subject matter knowledge, and as part of program delivery; facilitate committees addressing issues within the community related to health and wellness, financial literacy and family support.

Program Evaluation - 10%

  • Implement program evaluation for program improvement and grant reporting purposes;
  • Interact with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include: evaluating effectiveness of classes and instructors within program areas for all programs offered;
  • Analyze program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making improvements in programming;
  • Based on program parameters, interpret evaluation data to funder as appropriate or needed.
  • Assist in measuring gains in parental empathy towards meeting the needs of their children; gains in nurturing parenting beliefs, and knowledge and utilization of skills and strategies.

Administrative Responsibilities:
Direction - 5%

  • Assist the Program Leader in planning the delivery and structure of delivery for educational programs via various methods. Educational Programs will include, but not limited to: workshops and consultations for parents/caregivers promoting positive discipline, creating nurturing environments, building parental resilience, strengthening parent-child relationships and developing an understanding of child development as well as provide education and resources on topics effecting youth and families.
  • Assist with planning effective strategic marketing and mass media efforts in the promotion of assigned Parenting Skills Training Services, public affairs, events and functions.
  • Participate in planning for innovative, educational programs to meet the diverse needs of Dutchess County youth, parents and caregivers as needed;

Management - 5%

  • Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the assigned programs utilizing appropriate policies and procedures, as needed;
  • Assist the Program Leader to monitor assigned Parenting Skills Training Services programs income/expenses to ensure spending is within the program budget constraints;
  • Conduct follow up visits and finalize reporting to DCFS for each participant.

Coordination/Operation - 5%

  • Coordinate all aspects of the Parenting Skills Training Services activities;
  • Obtain evaluation data and program needs assessments from program participants based on existing evaluation framework and guidelines;
  • Provide administrative support to prepare materials for report submission to meet funding requirements (monthly, quarterly, and yearly);
  • Coordinate program referrals and ongoing outreach efforts in accordance with established Plan of Work;
  • Support the implementation of marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts;
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts;
  • Organize and coordinate activities related to assigned programs;

Professional Improvement - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities;
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
