The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia University???s School of International and Public Affairs develops evidence-based research to help address the world???s most challenging energy and climate problems through research, education, and dialogue. We accomplish this by: producing best-in-class research, providing a global platform to communicate, and training tomorrow???s leaders and communicators. We bridge the gap between academia and policy to support a global transition to decarbonize our energy system. The Senior Director of Development will partner with the founding director to ensure the Center has the funding needed to deliver on this mission.

The incumbent will develop and implement a development strategy to support the Center???s growth and impact, and secure support from individuals, foundations, and corporations for the Center???s priorities. They will manage a portfolio of donor prospects and manage the frontline fundraising activities of the Center Director and other key research scholars. This role will report jointly to the Director of the Center and the Vice President for University Development.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of the CGEP Leadership Team to help develop the strategy and vision for the organization.
  • Responsible for leading CGEP???s fundraising strategy. This includes developing and implementing a long-term funding model based on the Center???s growth plans.
  • Build and manage a development team to support the Center???s fundraising strategy.
  • Implement best practices and provide advice to the Center Director and Scholars on fundraising priorities, plans, and goals.
  • Achieve CGEP???s annual fundraising goals by setting and meeting quarterly and annual performance targets.
  • Manage a portfolio of prospects, maintain relationships with current partners, and identify and engage potential ones through regular outreach, cold calls, networking, events, meetings, and correspondence.
  • In partnership with the Director of Corporate Partnerships, make sure the Center is maximizing revenue from corporate affiliates on an annual basis and help strategize on how to continue to grow and develop that segment of the revenue base.
  • Partner with Center scholars and leadership to increase foundation grant support.
  • Manage and coordinate fundraising efforts of the CGEP Director and other key staff, including scheduling appointments, prepping for trips, organizing cultivation dinners, preparing briefings, and coordinating follow-up. Maintain donor lists and records, including assurance of database accuracy.
  • Lead a development team of two staff members, ensuring they meet their annual goals and performance metrics.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Center???s fundraising efforts, including stewardship, prospect identification and research, proposal writing, and preparation of briefings and meeting follow-up.
  • Coordinate with the SIPA Development team, the Office of Alumni and Development, and the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor???s degree is required.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in development, including programmatic fundraising, development planning and strategy, frontline fundraising, donor relations, and project management. Previous experience managing a team is required.
  • Impeccable organizational skills and attention to detail are essential. Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment, with proven excellence in project management, teamwork, analytical thinking, and donor relations. Must possess the ability to work with changing priorities and multiple projects.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators and academic leaders. Must have a passion for excellent donor service and commitment to exceptional quality.
  • High computer proficiency and the ability to create/read Excel spreadsheets are all a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of energy policy issues and familiarity with higher education and research institutions are preferred.
  • Experience with formalized databases such as Salesforce, Advance, and WordPress preferred.
