Job Description
We are seeking passionate and dedicated Substitute Teachers to provide high school-level instruction for adult learners (18+) during the absence of full-time educators. In this role, you will have the opportunity to teach across various subjects, leveraging both in-person and remote instruction methods. As a Substitute Teacher, you will be responsible for guiding students through their coursework, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, and supporting students in their academic growth.
This position may involve remote instruction from learning centers throughout California, primarily in counties including Nevada, Riverside, Monterey, Kern, Los Angeles (Antelope Valley), Merced, Ventura, and Butte.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Lesson Planning: Prepare and deliver engaging lesson plans across multiple subjects to diverse students in a self-contained classroom setting. Utilize the Canvas learning management system for online courses.
Student Assessment: Observe, evaluate, and assess adult students' academic progress in both online and in-person settings. Assign and grade projects, tests, and assignments.
Record Keeping and Grading: Maintain accurate student records, including grades and performance assessments. Utilize Aeries student information system for grading and reports.
Support and Mentorship: Work with the school counselor to guide students in their academic, career, and continuing education goals.
Classroom Management: Manage a positive and productive classroom environment, encouraging students to meet behavioral expectations.
Cultural Sensitivity: Conduct inclusive online classes tailored to students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Work effectively with colleagues to enhance the learning experience and contribute to the development of innovative teaching activities.
Adherence to Core Values: Understand and promote the organization's core values, ensuring that teaching practices align with ethical and legal standards.
Requirements: To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will be a proactive and flexible educator with the following qualifications and skills:
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree is required. A 30-Day substitute permit or multiple subject or single subject teaching credential is necessary.
Experience and Skills: Experience teaching in diverse, rural, or farm-working communities is a plus but not required. Experience with remote teaching platforms (like Canvas) and the ability to adapt to new technologies is essential.
Cultural Competency: A deep understanding of teaching strategies that support culturally diverse students, including those who are English language learners or from varied backgrounds.
Classroom Management Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage classroom behavior and foster a positive learning environment.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to effectively collaborate with students and colleagues.
Technology Proficiency: Comfortable using a variety of computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Ability to quickly learn and use new educational technologies.
Mandatory Requirements:
Must have tuberculosis (TB) clearance or be able to obtain it before beginning work.
Must undergo background clearance through the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Certifications:
A current Food Handlers Certificate, or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
A current Child Care Providers Mandated Reporter certificate, or the ability to complete the training within 90 days of hire.
Travel Requirements:
Ability to travel to different locations as required.
Language Skills:
Bilingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands include regular use of hands, frequent standing, sitting, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds. The position may require walking, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Close vision is required for working on a computer or handling documents.
Work Environment:
The work environment is generally in a classroom or remote teaching setting, with occasional travel to different educational centers. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Thursday: 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM (Class), 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM (Prep), 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM (Class)
Friday: 8:30 AM - 1:15 PM (Class), 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM (Prep)
