By joining our District 5/Engineering Support Branch as a Transportation Auto Truck Technician III in Shelby County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform major repairs and computer diagnostics on automotive, medium, and/or heavy equipment.


Holders of the Transportation Auto Truck Technician III position will complete tasks such as:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Perform maintenance of heavy equipment, cars, trucks, dozers, graders, backhoes, shovels, cranes, loaders, rollers, pavers, tractors, etc.
  • Replace fuel injection pumps.
  • Replace and inject differentials
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Rebuild heavy equipment engines.
  • Inspect and analyze light or heavy equipment for completeness of repairs and servicing reports.
  • Repair and overhaul all major systems and parts such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic and electrical systems
  • Perform complex duties by assisting higher-level technicians in function such as disassembling, repairing and assembling transmissions.
Physical effort required in the performance of automotive vehicle and equipment repairs.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.




EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have five years of automotive/equipment/truck repair technical experience.




Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Vocational or technical school training in automotive/truck repair or a related area will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.




Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Must be Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified in any three of the medium/ heavy truck or automobile test series, one of which must be diesel engines, gasoline engines, or engine repair. Employees in this job classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority within six months of employment in the job classification, documentation that he or she possesses a valid Class A commercial driver's license. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Probationary Period
